Can I bring a backpack and a small duffel bag on a plane?

I am traveling to Mexico for the summer. I need to take a lot of things but I would rather not have to check 2 bags. Can I bring a regular sized backpack & a smaller-sized duffel bag on the plane as carry-on items? Or do I have to choose just one of the 2 bags?
