I'm pretty sure he was concentrating entirely on the defense of Caen on that day and those immediately after, trying to prevent the British from breaking through. If he even knew about it, since the SS were not under his command, I doubt he would have even really cared or could have done something about it. He much more important things on his mind around that time, you know, what with D-Day having been four days before that event.
