Help with this relationship with this guy?

So this guy I really like is taking me to a dance. I think he might like me a little bit, but he knows that I do like him. Did he invite me to the dance because he feels sorry for me? How can I get our relationship to kind of takeoff? We're both a little shy. Just some advice would be nice.
