Should we celebrate or commemorate traitors who try to overthrow our government?

Surely a society/government is dysfunctional when it commemorates or honors traitors who try to overthrow that society/government by violent means - war. The confederacy lost the war; why would a government commemorate its enemy's efforts to overthrow it when over 700,000 lives were lost?
